‘Bespoke’ kitchens are often the biggest con in the market.

There are some very famous expensive brand names out there with glossy town centre studios who have managed to create so called bespoke kitchens out of chipboard boxes covered in veneer with factory made doors in frames bolted on the front. These are no more bespoke kitchens than what’s available in the out of town sheds.

So what is the most difficult thing about choosing a new kitchen?

It is extraordinary the range of choice, from Europe wide manufactures to little local ‘cottage’ operations. But In reality there is not that much choice. They are all, with a few exceptions, taking sheets of chipboard covered in melamine and turning them into boxes then sticking doors on.

There is more variety in the doors; at their cheapest and nastiest, panels of mdf with paper laminates vacuum sealed on, through to wooden or factory painted.

At a dinner party the other night, I introduce myself, Ian blah blah, Refurbished Kitchen Company blah blah. As is often the case, I get asked, “you must know a good cheap builder.” They were quite offended when I said

“No I know some crap cheap builders and some good expensive ones”

Got me to thinking about this whole business of how to pick a builder / plumber / kitchen company etc., not the least of which ‘cos I am one’
